Cannon Beach

I chose Cannon Beach as the setting for NINTH NIGHT because its always been a favorite place to visit and camp near growing up. I distinctly remember eating chowder and razor clams at the Driftwood Restaurant and Lounge with my family. Yummy!Haystack_Rock_Cannon_Beach_HDR_by_AaronPlotkinPhoto

Sparked

My love for the undersea world began at my grandfather’s house. Grandpa Jo is an avid reader. My favorite book in his den was an undersea book fill with pictures of dolphins, sharks, and other sea creatures. I’d flip through its pages when we’d visit my grandparents. That book sparked my interest in all things under the sea.

Thanks,

Grandpa Jo!

The gradual development of character and plot left me unable to put the book down. The way that James wove in themes around the complexity of forgiveness kept me thinking about Under beyond finishing the book. As an educator, I could see James’s consideration of young readers. Their is so much for young readers to explore within and beyond the pages in this book.
